New years resolution: Be more assertive

New years failure:
Me: “I’ll take these turnips.” (No price listed on the box at the farmer’s market).
Vendor: “That will be $10.”
Me (to myself): “That is ridiculous. I am not paying that much for a root vegetable. Just walk away. Walk away.”
Vendor: “Do you want a bag for these?”
Me: “No. I have bag.”
Me (to myself): “At least I said no to the bag.”

Roasted Turnips with Mustard Seeds

This is less of a recipe and more of a method. The amounts are approximations. I often use this preparation with asparagus, potatoes or cauliflower.

1 lb turnips, sliced in 1 inch wedges
1 – 2 tbsp olive oil
big pinch of kosher salt
1/2 tsp red chili flakes
1 tsp brown mustard seeds

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In a roasting pan, toss turnips with enough oil to coat. Add seasonings and toss again. Cook until brown blisters start to appear and turnips are tender, about 20 minutes. Toss once or twice during cooking time.

Serves 2-3

    thats so funny! Ive had the same experience recently at my farmer’s market! In my head, Im screaming “you’ve got to be kidding! 10$ for a few oranges?!” but then I bought them. There’s a bit of peer pressure going on at the farmer’s market, at least for me.

    I hope they were good, or great, at least?
